Bristol Wins One for Robinson

For the first time in League history, the coveted BDB Championship Trophy was claimed by long time Robinson resident, the Bristol Wicketmen.

Regarding the victory, owner Geoff Haddock had this to say…

Well, I need to be honest.   I really expected Bristol to be a real contender for a DMB championship.  Alas, it was the Bristol Academicals of the LP2 Baseball League (the Accies won 101 games, but lost in the playoffs).  As for the Wicketmen, I figured they’d win 75-80 games.  [*** BDB Management considers the LP2 League a distant Cousin League... its more of a Renegade League run by Anti-Canadian Joe Chapman ***]  After their typical strong start, I expected the Wicketmen to perform their annual swoon on around May 17.  But they kept on plugging away and built up a pretty strong lead that the Pathfinders, Menace, and Nationals could not overcome.

As for the playoffs, well, it’s pretty much a coin flip.  The Wickets somehow managed to win a series in which they struck out 94 times.  Yes, 94.  As for the final, wow.  When I saw that the Wickets won despite a negative run differential, it brought to mind the 1960 World Series.  The Wicketmen continued to rely on the long ball – 25 in 14 playoff games.  World Series MVP Jed Lowrie led the way, hitting 4 longballs and batting .480.  My commiserations to Bryn – the Sharks had another great season.

Thanks to the commish for another great BDB season.  Here’s to a lively off-season!

Frobel Division Review

The Frobel Division

Its this writer’s opinion that the Frobel Division will be the most exciting Division in Belted Deep Baseball.  Three teams will be vying for the top spot, all featuring great pitching and good hitting.  Picking a top team in this division is tough but the way this writer sees it, its stacked up as this.

  1. Sao Paulo
  2. Yorkshire
  3. Nassau
  4. New Westminster

The truth of the matter is, it is difficult to deny the defending champs the respect they deserve.  The difference between Sao Paulo and the rest of the division is slim, but the combination of their defense and bullpen are enough to give them the top nod heading into draft day.

Sao Paulo

(Typical Sao Paulo fans celebrating their third BDB title)

Strengths:  Pujols and Longoria lead this offense with Morneau, Swisher, Martinez and Drew backing them up.  Any team with Pujols in the number three spot is going to be top notch.  Their starting staff is four heavy featuring Weaver, Lee, Verlander and Braden … Garza is a solid #5 guy.  The pen just might be the best the leagues has ever seen with Marmol, Kup, Wagner, Thornton and Burnett.  This saves Rae leaving the other teams to fight over the pieces of relievers while they are able to concentrate on strengthening their weak spot.

Weaknesses:  The Outfield is the only blight on this team, which they may be able to patch up with some platoon scenarios.  Smith and Beltran leave big holes in the lineup.  Hill remains a horrible option at second base.

Overall:  This team will take a team of strong hitting and strong pitching to overcome.  If Rae is able to draft or trade his way into another strong bat, the rest of the division is going to be hard pressed to play catch up.

Yorkshire

I am sure that most readers had to rub their eyes when they read that the Yorkshire Moor Hens were featured as contenders for their first time in eleven (patient) years.  The Moor Hens feature the best offense in the division as well as arguably the best starting staff in the league.

Strengths:  Jiminez, Johnson, Latos, Pettitte and Matusz form the baseball version of the fab five.  What is even scarier is that four of these guys are all under the age of 26.  Also sitting back waiting for tone of these guys to falter is Hunter and Volquez.  Things are looking good in Yorkshire.  Their offense is led by AL MVP Hamilton who is supported by Gonzalez, McCann, Rasmus, Prado and Youkilis.  The only that is going to slow these guys down is injuries.

Weaknesses:  This team’s biggest weakness is defense.  Overall the team defense is not very good.  With the bat the only hole in this lineup is rookie SS Andrus.  The bullpen is largely here with only two or three arms to add.

Overall:  This team has the potential to walk away with the pennant.  Look for owner Mosher to bring in another bat in the draft and add some arms in the pen to make this team a sure lock in 2010.

Nassau

This team might be ranked higher, but the bets are on that the ownership is going to grow tired in the hot Bahama sun and will have a few mental lapses with all of the Blue Jay talent available in the draft.  Watch for some exciting draft decisions by this management team.

Strengths:  Halladay, Hudson and Cain form a formidable trio.  Three game series featuring Sao Paulo, Yorkshire and Nassau are going to be low scoring events.  Marcum and Kuroda will bring up the rear in this rotation.  The offense features three All Stars in Crawford, Fielder and Beltre and a solid supporting cast featuring Ortiz, Suzuki and Rios.  Michael Young may provide some trade bait for the Sharks as they are probably one main bat away from catching Sao Paulo.

Weaknesses:  Not too many weaknesses in this lineup.  Posada will need a strong compliment as he is not the defensive player that he used to be (if he ever was) … The pen could also use an arm or two to keep up with Sao Paulo.

Overall:  This is a strong team, and would be the favorite in every other division, however with the defending champs remaining strong and the Yorkshire youth movement finally coming around, the Sharks could find themselves out of the playoffs despite having one of the best teams in memory.

New Westminster

The Plaidsox are clearly a team in transition.  Four bats and one arm do not make for a contender.  This team will definitely be an afterthought the first time through their own division.  Look for a Youth movement to begin as Ryan Sambrook may take a page or two out of his brother’s book to contend within the next couple of years. (If the elder Sambrook ever competes)

Strengths:  Mauer, Wright and Upton make for a good young trio, the challenge will be surrounding them with established enough talent to use them in their prime.  The veteran Vernon Wells provides a strong bat and great trade bait for this team.  Look for this tem to not look the same in the future.  In the rotation there really isn’t much to talk about except for Santana who is a #3 or #4 starter disguised as a #1.

Weaknesses:  This team is a complete rebuilding project as there is not one part of this team that doesn’t need work.  On offense the team will need a second baseman, a first baseman and an outfielder who are better than average.  The starting staff is a mess and could use another three starters.  The pen is not as strong as they used to be as Papelbon seems to have lost his magic touch.

Overall:  It’s going to be a long summer for this team.  Not enough youth to make things exciting and not enough talent to make the team interesting to watch on a daily basis.  Look for some changes and some shrewd drafting of high ceiling players in order to make this team a contender in the near future.

Jenkins Division Review

The Jenkins Division

Predicted Order of Finish

  1. North Bay
  2. Grand Rapids
  3. Hamilton
  4. Langley

Of all the division, this division is the least volatile.  The only two teams in the running are North Bay and Grand Rapids.  Hamilton and Waterloo (for once) has some talent and therefore hope in the next coming years.

North Bay

For the first time in league history, the Trappers did not make it to the league finals, being ousted in the first round by the Beaconsfield Pathfinders.  This year the Trappers are favored to win this division but making the finals is of great concern.

Strengths:   North Bay features the strongest offense in the league.  Cabrera, Cano and Holliday make up a trio of All Stars and they are supported by some above average bats in A Rod and Dunn.  Their pitching staff is helped by one strong arm in Santana … but not much else.  If they team gets anywhere it’s going to be because of their ability to plainly outscore the opposition.

Weaknesses:  The pitching staff is not like it used to be with Johnson and a younger and less injured Santana.  Although Lilly makes for a fine #3 starter, as a #2 he is a significant downgrade.  The final three of Floyd, Rodriguez and Greinke all make fine #5 starters… but three of them are two too much.  The bullpen is also a glaring hole which usually can be fixed in the draft but North Bay is not too heavy on top selections.  Uribe and Pence remain their two biggest weaknesses in their lineup, and when all is said and done, that is not too bad.

Overall:  This could be a tough transition for the Trappers.  Although there are some solid youngsters with the bats Trapper management is hoping that Greinke and Floyd can get back to their promise.  If North Bay wants to make it to the finals, they will need to add another arm to the mix.

Grand Rapids

If there is a team that could easily take down the Trappers this year, it’s the Grand Rapid Reformers.  The Reformers never seem to jump out at you with star power but there is rarely any weakness in their lineup.

Strengths:  When Josh Beckett goes down with one of his worst years, one would think that would spell disaster for your team.  However the Reformers have three other solid pitchers in Lester, Danks and Myers.  On the back end of their rotation one finds youngster Romero and the veteran Zambrano.  This team will go as their starting pitching goes.  On the offensive front the main punches are going to come from Werth, Uggla and Cruz.  Thus far their pen in the best in the division, but that is not saying a lot.

Weaknesses:  Offensively their biggest hole is at firstbase with the injury to Kendry Morales.  The best thing about this is that it’s the position most easily to replace to look for Grand Rapids to move quickly to fix this problem.  The bullpen needs shoring up and a few more platoon players and all will be will in Michigan.

Hamilton Splitterz

Hamilton has been in the thick of the fight these past two years as the BDB Wildcard team, once making it to the finals, and this past season being outed in the first round by the eventual Champions, the Tri Color.  Last season Hamilton, knowing they had a chance at the title leveraged some of their future for the present.  This season they will begin to pay the price of this run at the playoffs.

Strengths:  Soto, Gonzalez, Ramirez and Ethier… the Hispanic French Connection remain this team’s offensive threats.  Josh Hamilton and his MVP performance are gone supplying the Splitterz with their best starter in Kershaw.  Wainright is also gone, in his place stands Billingsley.  Hudson provides some youth and hope for next season.  Besides these guys, hope will remain in the off years of Sandoval and Kubel is only for a season and that Stubbs will become the star many have predicted.

Weaknesses:  No hitting at second, third nor in the DH position, the latter being the easiest to remedy.  The back end of the rotation is pretty unspectacular with Morrow and de la Rosa.  Morrow remains an interest pitching one of the finest performances in BDB last season.  The pen is a complete mess and will need a full makeover in order to go anywhere.

Overall:  When one thinks of the Splitterz, one has to be reminded of the great US General, George Patton who’s standing command was never to retreat.  It’s this same mantra that resides in the Hamilton ownership ironically enough in Dutch owner Jordan Spoelstra.  Look for the Splitterz to be fast and furious on the trade front and have them look no further than next year as a year in which they will be back in the hunt. There is plenty of youth on the team to bounce back that there is no need for a major overhaul here.  No chance at contending in 2010 … however this statement will at least spark another two to three wins out of this team

Langley

It’s been a long time since anything good was written about the Royals however as Bob Dylan reminds us… “The times are a changing”

Strengths:  All those draft picks are starting to develop a very young and talented pitching core.  Buchholz, Sanchez, Kennedy, Hughs, Pelfry are all beginning to pay big league dividends.  The offense is a two player lineup, MLB Rookie of the Year in Buster Posey and Super Uber Shortstop Troy Tulowitski.  Both players look to improve their solid stats with a full year of playing time.

Weaknesses:  Still plenty to speak of.  Although their pitching prospects are paying dividends, their hitting prospects are barely going to be able to be used as trade bait.  The outfield of Fowler, Snider an LaPorta are all easily replaced and may all need to ride the pine for the seasons.  Barton, although somewhat productive, is not the right option at first.

Overall:  It will be interesting to see what owner Mike Sambrook will do with this team.  It is near impossible to build a championship team from the farm system… as the difficulty of having the hitting and pitching combine to be great is pretty limited.  Look for Sambrook to not be afraid to trade if the deal warrants it.  He is sitting on some good stock such as Matt Weiters so do not be surprised if he takes in more picks and young talent.

2010 BDB Pre-Draft Team Preview

The Robinson Division

Predicted Order of Finish

  1. Beaconsfield
  2. Montreal
  3. Ottawa
  4. Bristol

Going into the draft there is not a lot of difference between these four teams.  Beaconsfield gets the nod because they feature the Division’s best bullpen and best defense.   This season will be a turnaround in their strategy, as pitching was once the scarce resource, we now find teams searching for offense to make the biggest difference in the standings.

Beaconsfield

Last year the Pathfinders found themselves in the League Championship finals for the second time in a row.  Owner Don Brodeur attributes this to a defined change in strategy which is to jettison draft picks and future security for established players to plug in holes which are clearly known about in the present.  Again Brodeur has been active on the trade scene shoring up areas that he knows will not be remedied by the draft.  This season he has already traded for Paul Konerko and Ryan Braun who instantly become his #1 and #2 offensive threats with Ryan Howard experiencing a down year.

Strengths:  Felix Hernandez, Tim Lincecum and Chris Carpenter.  With these three horses in the stables, one only needs a meager offense.  The bullpen is also the strongest of the division which should make a difference later in the year, unlike last year where every team’s bullpen exploded.

Weakness:  The #4 and #5 starters are nothing to be fearful of and the outfield by and large is one of the worst in the league when it comes to offense by strong defensively.  Look for a lot of close games this year.

Overall:  Could use another starter for the tail end of the rotation.  Right now they are hovering around replacement value.  Not sure they will find the offense to make a difference in the outfield.  Not a lot of early draft picks to pick up prospects to move for later talent.  Although ranked on top, they are certainly capable of being pushed off the top rung.

Montreal

Montreal is at a cross roads.  They have been stock piling young talent for a long time and this appears to be a down enough year for other teams that they could really shine right now.  Montreal boasts three strong arms in the rotation and have a steady enough offense that they could easily jump to the top of the list.  They also possess enough young talent that they could easily bring in another difference maker through trades.

Strengths:  Wainright, Sabathia and Hamels are three top choices at the front of the rotation.  Hanson and Gallardo are also above average so there is no worry to panic in that spot.  In fact they could stand to lighten their rotation by a single arm and still be able to compete.  Votto and Zimmerman at the corners is something to celebrate about.  They players are both young and talented and are the cornerstone to this offense.  Markakis, Hunter and Kemp make for a competent outfield as well.

Weakness:  The middle infield isn’t much to speak about.  Polanco and whoever they decide to start at SS are not going to win them many games with their bats.  The team might be better served finding the two best glove men in the league and having them do their damage with the glove instead of the bat.  The bullpen needs some help as well.  Bard remains a talent, but beyond that, nothing above average here to be found.

Overall:  Can easily compete and their greatest weakness can easily be overcome in the draft and in through trades.  Montreal already has young talent that other teams on the drift would certainly like to get their hands on.  A definite contender for their first time!

Ottawa

The Ottawa Nationals have an interesting personality as a team.  They seem to not make any splash deals via trades or draft yet … but still manage to hang around the top of the standings.  However it’s not because they are experiencing an exceptional year, it’s just that they seem to shine when all else are failing to shine.

Strengths:   Talent isn’t the issue here, it’s the depth.  Offensively the team’s strength is found in the outfield.  Choo is the All Star on this team and he is followed by the speedy youngster McCutchen.  Hart and Scott are strong enough bats to be of no concern to owner Barras.  The rotation is strong at the top as well with Price and Sanchez and surprise CJ Wilson.   It’s tough not to say that Teixeira is a strength, but this year is a down year for him, but should bounce back in the next season.

Weakness:  Beyond Wilson in the pen, there is nothing.  This should be remedied in the draft.  The left side of the infield is pretty sad as well.  Reynolds is no answer at the hot corner, and there should be some talent to help there.  At short however, there might not be any help for Pennington.  The bottom two slots of the rotation need help … and there might be an arm or two in the draft which could make a significant improvement here.  Certainly have the ability to do the Ottawa … which is the other teams underperform Ottawa will contend, so there is a chance and that is enough to drive this Barras owned team!

Bristol

The key to the future of this division is Bristol.  Bristol is sitting on a lot of young talent and could make a North Bay type of run in the Robinson Division.  With four first round picks in the upcoming draft there is no reason to believe that Bristol will continue to have the other teams looking in their rearview mirror this season and the next.

Strengths:  Besides plenty of youth, the offense is lacking true superstars beyond the emergence of Bautista and Weeks finally living up to his potential.  The outfield is fine, but not spectacular.  Jay Bruce is turning into an upcoming All Star.  The rotation is solid from one through five.  There is no need for them to grab an arm to make a difference unless it’s a Cy Young candidate.  Cahill, Gonzalez, Anderson and Chacin are all young and promise to get better.  Oswalt makes for a fine old man until his arm finally breaks off his 5’9” body.

Weakness:  Youth.  Too much youth, but they all seem to be growing together.  If they continue to grow in the right direction then this will quickly turn into a strength.  Third base could use some improvement as Stewart hasn’t come around as expected.  Mind you, Bristol could bring in a firstbaseman and have Bautista move to the hot corner, plenty of areas to move players around.  Martin is fine defensively but he is no longer the offensive force that he once was, but could bounce back.  There is nothing to this bullpen that strikes fear into an opposing hitter

Overall:  This is a team that could contend this season but with the amount of quality youth they possess they quickly can turn things around.  If they draft well, Bristol’s eyes simply won’t be on BDB 2011… but on BDB 2011 to 2021.
